Ridwan was conducting his PhD in civil engineering at University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. His research is in concrete structures, in particular the rehabilitation and strengthening existing concrete structures, combined with the use of non linear finite element analysis (NLFEA) to study the parameters regarding the use of new material. This research was conducted under supervision of Dr Samir Dirar.

There are several techniques have been developed to enhance the performance of under-designed RC buildings, ranging from the traditional techniques (concrete jacketing and steel jacketing) to the so-called modern technique with the application of high strength fibres reinforced polymers (FRPs) material. However, experimental results have shown that FRP de-bonding remains the main drawback and prevent the utilisation of the high tensile strength of the FRPs.
A newly technique, namely deep embedded (DE) method was developed to strengthen shear deficient beam (Valerio et al., 2009, Chaallal et al., 2011). The successful of DE method was extended to the strengthening of shear deficient beam-column joints conducted at the University of Birmingham (Ridwan, 2016). Beam-column joints that were strengthened using DE method exhibited more enhanced behaviour where damage occurred in the beam region at the early stages of loading, suggesting the outset of a beam hinging mechanism.
